The Glittering Lure: Evening Daily Devotional

Grace to you & peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

“The Glittering Lure” is from Dr. David Jeremiah’s ‘Walking with God: 365 Daily Devotions’ July 2nd’s entry.

“Let no one say when he is tempted, ‘I am tempted by God’; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.” James 1:13-15

Glassy waters, warm sun, the serenity of nature… The fisherman casts his line out across the water, and the little lure entices a brace passerby lurking under the surface. Within moments there will be a nibble of curiosity, then a violent struggle, and ultimately, dinner for the fisherman.

Just as a glittering lure attracts fish, so our lustful hearts are attracted to tempting things. Even while we are standing next to God, we can be tempted to sin. Who throws us the line with the deadly hook? Who maneuvers that enticing bait?

We should remember that all sin comes from Satan. God permits trials in order to strengthen us, but Satan tests us to expose our weaknesses. Let us strive to become careful and well prepared to identify and escape Satan’s lure.

“There are some who say that there is no Devil, but if they would try to live just one day for God, they would know that the Devil does exist.” Herschel Ford

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.
