“What A Concept!” is November 12’s entry from Dr. David Jeremiah’s ‘Turning Points with God: 365 Daily Devotions’ (2014).
"Though the LORD is on high, yet He regards the lowly;
but the proud He knows from afar."
Psalm 138:6
Paul Graves was sworn in as mayor of Sandpoint, Idaho, in January 2000. In a 2007 article in Spokane’s Spokesman Review newspaper, Graves said this about public service: “While hubris seems more in style these days, it is humility that serves us all much better.” He cited Albert Einstein: “The significant problems we have cannot be solved at the same level of thinking with which we created them.” And he paired those words with Paul’s in Romans 12:3 (GNT): “Do not think of yourself more highly than you should. Instead, be modest in your thinking”.
Humility. Modesty. What a concept! If many of our problems are caused by a lack of humility (that is, by pride), then we will need to think differently to solve them. The most different way is abject humility before God–the fall-down-on-your-face kind of humility that says, “God, I can’t figure this out. I’m dependent on You alone. Please grant me wisdom and help. I humble myself before You.”
The thinking that got us into trouble cannot get us out. When you are in trouble, humble yourself before God and receive His grace to help in time of need.
To end, a quote from Unknown, “Humility is the only certain defense against humiliation.”
