“Blinders” is November 16’s entry from Dr. David Jeremiah’s ‘Turning Points with God: 365 Daily Devotions’ (2014).
"Let your eyes look straight ahead."
Proverbs 4:25
Horses are high-strung animals, and easily spooked. That’s partly because their marginal vision is limited. They can see what’s in front of them, but anything coming from the left or right startles them, and they’re easily distracted by peripheral objects. That’s why you often see blinders on horses. Blinders keep horses focused on what’s immediately before them, which prevents them from being scared by movement along a parade route or race course.
Christians, too, need blinders. Job says, “I have made a covenant with my eyes; why then should I look upon a young woman?” (Job 31:1). The psalmist says, “I will set nothing wicked before my eyes” (Psalm 101:3) and “Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things” (Psalm 119:37).
Much of today’s evil comes in a visual form–on television and in movies, and on the screens of our computers and portable electronic devices. Make a covenant with your eyes not to look at unholy images, and ask God to turn your eyes away from worthless things.
“Let your eyes look straight ahead.”
To end, a quote from Charles Haddon Spurgeon, “To keep the heart in a good estate… first, [make a] careful study of the senses, specially of the eyes.”
