Watching & Waiting: Evening Daily Devotional

Grace to you & peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

“Watching & Waiting” is from Dr. David Jeremiah’s ‘Walking with God: 365 Daily Devotions’ July 3rd’s entry.

"Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time is." Mark 13:33

Children wait for Christmas morning. Cooks wait for water to boil. Job seekers wait for the phone to ring. Young men on bended knee wait to hear their beloved say ‘yes’. Revelers wait for midnight on New Year’s Eve. Everybody, every day, everywhere, waits for something. But how many people are waiting for the return of Jesus with the same enthusiasm?

Jesus made it clear that the moment He returns for His church will be a surprise. The surprise won’t be that it happens, but when it happens. We can imagine more than one reason why God didn’t reveal the date or time of Christ’s return. One good reason is that it is based on finishing a task, not an arbitrary time standard. Jesus did provide this insight: “And this Gospel of the Kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come”. (Matthew 24:14). So fulfillment of The Great Commission is a key marker relating to Christ’s return. But not specific enough to mark on a calendar, which is why Jesus said, “Take heed, watch and pray.”

Would you be ready to meet Jesus if He returned today?

“It is later than it has ever been before, and the smartest thing any man can do is to set his watch by God’s clock.” Vance Havner

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.
