God (YHWH) is so just, we forget just how just He is. With His first command and man’s first sin, He demonstrates both.
“God created man in His own image” (Genesis 1:27) from the “dust of the ground” (Genesis 2:7). Man was placed “in the garden of Eden” (Genesis 2:15), a paradise that we cannot fathom. God first blessed Adam and Eve and granted them “dominion over the…earth” (Genesis 1:28). Then, God gave only one command punishable by death, “not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil” (Genesis 2:17).
Adam and Eve, even after repeating back the command to the deceiving serpent (Genesis 3:2), defied the Creator of “the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1), and disobeyed God (Genesis 3:3), knowingly sinning.
When God confronted them on what happened (Genesis 3:8-11), instead of carrying out justice by execution, God showed mercy and grace by instead cursing them (Genesis 3:15-19) and then He made “garments of skins and clothed them” (Genesis 3:21)–so they were not ashamed–and God “sent him out from the garden of Eden to work the ground from which he was taken” (Genesis 3:23).
Instead of dying, Adam lived for “930 years” (Genesis 5:5). Instead of us not being here at all, we are merely cursed (Genesis 3:15).
Do not believe the serpent’s deceptions, but know God’s mercy and grace.
